On! RI Most Frequently Holds ASEAN Summits Compared to its Neighbors

Jakarta, Indonesia – Indonesia will hold the ASEAN High Level Conference (KTT) for the first time after the Covid-19 pandemic. This ASEAN Summit will be held twice a year in person. Indonesia is recorded as hosting the ASEAN Summit for the sixth time.

For your information, the ASEAN Summit is a meeting of leaders of member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). ASEAN consists of eleven member countries, namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Timor Leste.

The 42nd ASEAN Summit was held in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) on 10-11 May 2023. Meanwhile, the 43rd ASEAN Summit will be held in Jakarta on 5-7 September 2023 or this week.

By being trusted to host again, Indonesia has been recorded as hosting the ASEAN Summit six times since 1976. Previously, Indonesia has hosted ASEAN in the following periods:

1st ASEAN Summit, Bali 23-24 February 1976
9th ASEAN Summit, Bali 7-8 October 2003
19th ASEAN Summit, Jakarta, 7-8 May 2011
20th ASEAN Summit, Jakarta, 14-19 November 2011

43 ASEAN Summit, Jakarta, 5-7 September 2023

After hosting it five times, the last being on 9-11 May 2023 in Labuan Bajo, Nusa Tenggara, this time Jakarta has the opportunity to be the host city.

The ASEAN Summit began in Bali, Indonesia, on February 23 and 24 1976. This summit was first held with the aim of uniting voices and increasing cooperation between ASEAN member countries. Since then, summits have been held regularly every year with the aim of creating peace, stability and prosperity in Southeast Asia.

Being the host is certainly an honor and something to be proud of for Indonesia. previously in 2022 Indonesia was trusted to hold the Presidency of the G20 Summit. A total of 17 Heads of State and important world figures attended the agenda.

At that time, the presence of the G20 played an important role in encouraging dialogue, cooperation and coordination of policy responses for global economic recovery. Likewise, the ASEAN Summit will encourage the wheels of the national economy in a number of cities in Indonesia. Holding the 2023 Asean Summit is a momentum to show Indonesia’s development progress and attract foreign investment to the country.
